Glandular fever, a.k.a. infectious mononucleosis, is an infection most commonly caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV (also known as the human herpesvirus 4) is one of the most common human viruses. EBV causes approximately 80–90% of cases of glandular fever, with the remainder due largely to cytomegalovirus (CMV), human herpesvirus 6, toxoplasmosis, HIV, and adenovirus.
